Costume Drama: Dulhe Ki Saaliyo

"Hum Aapke Hain Koun" (1994) is a mega film. The highest grossing Hindi film ever, it is a long film with a huge star cast and features 14 songs. Many dubbed it as a "wedding video" on account of its long wedding sequences and songs. Presenting one of the songs from this film. It is centred around the playful tradition of the bride's sisters and friends hiding the groom's shoes and demanding money for their return.

Raamlaxman's music is one of the high points of this film. His real name is Vijay Patil. He formed a team with composer Raam under the title of Raamlaxman. After Raam's passing away, he continued to compose music with the same title.

Her Story: Exchanging Rings!

After a very cordial meeting with parents over tea, the stage is now set for the wedding. The first step towards this alliance is an engagement. Both families celebrate while the couple exchange rings. There is fun, laughter, singing, dancing and good food as family and friends enjoy, looking forward to the wedding.

I did not have to think very hard for a sagaai song. This one from "Hum Aapke Hain Koun" (1994) conveys the excitement around an engagement ceremony very well. Many thought of this film as a long music video. True, there are many songs in HAHK depicting wedding rituals and I will have to resist the temptation of posting more of them.

Her Story: A Young Woman - 1

Our girl is not a little girl any more. She is a beautiful young woman with lots of dreams and hopes for her future. She is at an age where she is curious about what it feels like to fall in love. I have selected two songs that describe this stage in a woman's life. The first one is from "Hum Aapke Hain Koun" (1994). The other one follows in the next post.

Trivia: This song was not included in the film, one of the biggest grossers in the Hindi film industry. The 3.5 hour-long film had 12 songs. This song, the 13th one, appears in the original soundtrack though. Madhuri Dixit was older than the character she was playing, but she is bubbly and looks cute. Lata Mangeshkar, who was 65 then, sang this song which was supposed to be filmed on a teenager.
